Species: Dog
Condition: Factor Viii Deficiency
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Also known as Haemophilia A, factor VIII deficiency is a blood disorder impairing its ability to clot and stop the bleeding in case of injury. Affected dogs are usually male, as it is inherited as a sex linked trait. The symptoms can range depending on the severity of the deficiency. In serious cases the dogs experience spontaneous bleeding episodes such as nosebleeds, bleeding into joints with lameness, spontaneous bruising, etc. In case of severe injuries or demanding surgical procedures, the dogs are in danger of life threatening blood loss. In those situations the vet can promptly administer blood transfusion to stabilize the animal.
