Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency in dogs

Young dogs (between 4 months and 1 year of age) have stunted growth and are generally lethargic. Pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency essentially causes a deficiency in red blood cells, so your dog may have discoloured gums and a rapid heart rate, even at rest. There is currently no treatment for this condition, but your vet will be able to give advice on caring for your pet to keep them as comfortable as possible. Even with the best of care, dogs with (PK) deficiency very rarely live beyond 4 years as the disorder often leads to other complications such as bone marrow failure and liver disease.
