Species: Dog
Condition: Von Willebrand’s Disease
Organ System: Urogenital

Von Willebrand’s disease (vWD) is graded from type 1 to type 3 according to severity. If your dog suffers from type 1 vWD, then symptoms will be restricted to fairly mild bleeding episodes such as nosebleeds and bleeding gums. Your dog will be susceptible to excessive blood loss after injury, surgery or giving birth. Your dog is much less likely to suffer from type 2 or 3 vWD, which leads to a much higher level of bleeding. There is no cure for this condition; however your vet will be able to advise on how to manage your dog to minimize the risk of a bleeding incident and on what action to take if bleeding does occur.
