An inherited condition of impaired ability to fight diseases. Affected puppies produce abnormal T-lymphocytes; white blood cells specialized to fight off infections. As a result, they are very susceptible to infectious diseases. Owners usually first notice puppiesÂ’ slower growth rate in comparison to their littermates. At the age of 8 to 12 weeks, after their maternal protection wears off, they start suffering from severe recurrent infections. The diagnosis is confirmed through detailed blood analysis. Although there are some options for supportive treatment, it is recommended to consult with the vet about further steps and decisions.
