Species: Dog
Condition: Osteosarcoma
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
The most common bone cancer in dogs; osteosarcoma mostly affects limbs. It spreads quickly and aggressively, destroying the bone structure from the inside out and metastasising to various vital organs. Dog owners usually notice lameness and reluctance to use the affected limb, swelling and signs of significant pain. Veterinarian confirms the diagnosis with X-ray imaging and analysis of the affected bone tissue. There are several palliative and therapeutic options, including pain relief, chemotherapy, radiation and amputation of the affected leg. But, having in mind the malignancy and aggressiveness of the tumour, the prognosis is guarded.
