Species: Dog
Condition: Polycystic Liver & Kidney Disease
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
A condition in which one or more cysts can be found in kidneys and liver of the dog. As the cysts form, they cause damage to the affected, with the appearance of kidney failure symptoms. Liver cysts rarely cause any symptoms. Once the kidneys are severely damaged, symptoms become evident. Animals drink and urinate excessively, may have bad breath, poor appetite and weight loss. Upon examination, liver and kidney usually appear enlarged. The changes are visible on the X-ray images of the abdomen. Treatment options are limited, as the cysts cannot be removed. Affected dogs should be frequently monitored.
