Species: Dog
Condition: Acanthosis Nigricans
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
This disorder in its inherited form is almost unique to Dachshunds, although it can occur in other breeds as a side-effect of other skin disorders. The main symptom is a darkening of the skin, which becomes tougher to the touch. Your dog will lose hair in the affected area. This condition generally becomes apparent at about 3 to 12 months and prompt treatment is necessary to prevent your dog contracting an infection which will cause more damage to the skin. Although this disorder can not be cured it can be managed and your dog will be able to enjoy a good quality of life but should not be used for breeding.
