Species: Dog
Condition: Atopic Dermatitis
Organ System: Cardiovascular
Long lasting skin inflammation associated with allergies. Allergens are absorbed through the skin or inhaled and they cause severe itchiness. The dog is aggressively scratching and licking affected parts of the body (ears, wrists, ankles, underarms, groin, etc.) causing skin damage and infection with discoloration and hair loss. The condition can worsen periodically depending on the cause. Atopic dermatitis is incurable; once it develops, it is present for life. The vet will administer anti-allergic drugs and suggest avoiding substances that seem to trigger the reaction. In severe cases shampoos and ointments can relieve the symptoms.
