Species: Dog
Condition: Lymphedema
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Swollen skin, which is spongy to the touch, particularly on the hind legs and sometimes on the front legs, abdomen, tail and ears. Although your pet will be generally healthy, they will be more susceptible to infection and will take longer to heal after injury. In mild cases lymphedema may clear up of its own accord or persist without troubling your dog, however in more severe cases your vet will advise on the use of soft compressive bandages to reduce the swelling and may prescribe antibiotics in case of infection. Dogs who have had an episode of lymphedema should not be used for breeding and nor should their close relatives.
