Species: Dog
Condition: Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is a disorder which is almost unique to the German Shepherd. Essentially it is a condition in which the pancreas effectively eats itself instead of assisting to digest food. Because of the lack of nourishment being passed through the body, your dog is likely to have a huge appetite but will lose weight. They are so hungry they will eat a number of inappropriate substances, including their own faeces, which are likely to be loose. They will defecate much more often than usual. Although this condition can not be cured, it can be managed with pancreatic enzyme extract which your vet will provide.
