Megaesophagus in dogs

Species: Dog
Condition: Megaesophagus
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Megaoesophagus is a condition in which your dog is unable to digest food properly as they lack the ability to make the necessary muscle contractions to move food from the mouth to the stomach. This leads to dilation of the oesophagus. The result of this is that food is regurgitated without being digested. Currently there is no cure for this condition, however your vet will be able to advise on managing it. This will involve feeding small, frequent, high-caloric meals from an elevated position so that gravity assists the passage of food. Your vet will also give advice on recognizing potential secondary complications.
