Lymphocytic Thyroiditis in dogs

As a result of the faulty immune system, thyroid gland loses its ability to function properly. Immune system starts attacking its own thyroid gland for no obvious reason causing decreased production of its hormones. Affected animals are therefore experiencing a variety of metabolic, nervous and dermatologic symptoms. Their skin is dry, thin and scaly with hair loss, pigmentation and skin infections. Affected animals also suffer from infertility, weight gain, heart problems, seizures, etc. Although this condition is not life threatening, it impairs the dog’s quality of life. It can be treated with hormone replacements with regular check-ups.
