Species: Dog
Condition: Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth
Organ System: Respiratory
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is characterized by chronic diarrhoea and consequent malnourishment (leading to a failure to put on weight or even weight loss). The condition is caused by an increase in the number of bacteria in the small intestine. In German Shepherds this is thought to be due to deficiency in Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is a form of protein vital for protecting the skin, and the respiratory, digestive and reproductive tracts. In other breeds the exact cause is unknown. This disorder can not be cured but it can be managed. Your vet will prescribe medication and will provide advice on your dog’s diet.
