Syncope is a clinical term for fainting. It is a temporary loss of consciousness caused by the short term interruption in the brain circulation. The brain doesn’t receive enough oxygen and shortly “shuts down”. Syncope can be seen as well in dogs suffering from heart disease. Although syncope is short lasting and the animal recovers instantly, it is important to see out veterinary opinion in order to eliminate some serious possible causes. The vet will thoroughly examine the dog, taking blood and urine samples for further evaluation and performing ECG to rule out heart disease and CT brain scan to exclude possible brain damage.
