Species: Dog
Condition: Cervical Disc Disease
Organ System: Cardiovascular
Cervical discs are “pressure relief cushions” situated between the bones of the spine. They can get damaged, break and slip from their places causing pain and paralysis; the range of symptoms depending on the severity of the damage. Middle aged dogs are most commonly affected. Owners notice reluctance to turn head, neck tremors, arched back and in severe cases urinary incontinence with various degrees of paralysis. In this condition veterinary care is immediately needed. In mild cases painkillers and anti-inflammation drugs will resolve the issue, but in serious cases, surgery might be needed. In all cases, strict rest is obligatory.
