Choroidal Hypoplasia in dogs

Species: Dog
Condition: Choroidal Hypoplasia
Organ System: Cardiovascular

Developmental anomaly of the eye. Choroidea is a lining at the inner eye surface containing blood vessels. It provides oxygen and nutrients for the light sensitive parts of the eye, the retina. In dogs with this condition, the retina can deteriorate due to poor blood supply, causing vision impairment and even blindness in severe cases. The condition doesnÂ’t worsen in time and it is often accompanied by other eye anomalies. Changes on the retina and the choroidea can be seen ophthalmoscopically, which helps your vet with diagnosis. Choroidal hypoplasia is inherited as a recessive trait. It is therefore unwise to breed affected animals.
