Species: Dog
Condition: Mastocytoma
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
A lump-looking tumour consisted of mast cells, normal components of the immune system associated with allergic reactions. Mastocytoma is mostly benign, but sometimes has malignant tendencies. It usually affects older dogs, usually as skin tumour, but can also be found elsewhere in the body. It varies in its appearance, usually seen as a nodule or an ulcer. All suspicious nodules should be examined; the vet will aspirate the contents and microscopically examine them. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice, often with good results; but in case of malignancy and metastases, the prognosis is guarded and additional treatment is required.
