Species: Dog
Condition: Multiple Colobomas
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Coloboma is a result of the incomplete eye development seen as a gap in one or more eye structures. When it is located in the iris, it looks like it has a keyhole in it; but it can be seen in other eye structures, from eyelids and lens to optic disk. Depending on the location and the severity of the defect, a range of symptoms can be seen: cataract, lens displacement, impaired vision and further complications eventually leading to blindness. Coloboma can be diagnosed in puppies as young as 14 days; as soon as their eyes are opened. The vet will ophthalmoscopically examine the defect and depending on the severity recommend surgical treatment.
