Species: Dog
Condition: Nasolacrimal Puncta Atresia
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Nasolacrimal duct is a canal draining tears from inside of the eye. In this condition, the opening of this canal is not present. Therefore, tears are constantly draining dog’s face. In some cases this is a congenital condition, present from birth and probably inherited from parents. As the tears are dripping from the eyes, the hair surrounding the eyes is constantly wet, creating an ideal environment for the bacteria and subsequent infection. The vet can diagnose the atresia with specific ophthalmologic tests. The condition can be successfully corrected surgically once the associated infection is treated with antibiotic eye drops.
