Species: Dog
Condition: Pemphigus Foliaceous
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
A skin disease caused by the autoimmune destruction of the tissue. Due to a faulty immune system, the body is attacking itself. Affected dogs have scales, crusts and ulcers on the skin, with fluid filled cysts and swollen lymph nodes. The skin is very itchy and painful. Footpads are overgrown and cracking. The condition is often complicated with bacterial infections. The vet will diagnose it by evaluating and testing the skin samples. In severe cases dogs need to be hospitalized until they are stabilized. Steroids are given to stop the inflammation. After remission, the symptoms can return, especially after prolonged sunlight exposure.
