Species: Dog
Condition: Lissencephaly
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Lissencephaly relates to abnormal development of nerve cells in the womb. Symptoms usually become evident shortly after birth and include behavioural abnormalities (which can be severe), seizures and visual impairments including complete blindness. Unfortunately there is currently no cure for this condition so any treatment consists of alleviating symptoms as much as possible and providing care to keep your dog comfortable. You may wish to discuss with your vet whether it would be appropriate to have your dog put to sleep. If your dog has this condition they should not be used for breeding and nor should their parents and siblings.
