Cutaneous mucinosis is a disorder which is almost unique to the Chinese shar pei. It is characterized by abnormal amounts of mucin (thick, clear, sticky fluid) under the skin. Although this disorder is unsightly as it leads to excessive skin folding and/or lumps and bumps; it does not have any adverse impact on your pet’s health and your dog is likely to outgrow this disorder by the time they are about 5. It is possible that this disorder only affects the shar pei as this breed already has a high amount of mucin in the skin. Although this condition is essentially cosmetic in impact, you should not use your dog for breeding.
