Species: Dog
Condition: Pannus – Chronic Superficial Keratitis
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Pannus, or chronic superficial keratitis, is initially visible as a greyish haze in your dog’s eyes. The cornea (the transparent layer forming the front of the eye) steadily becomes darker and scarring occurs. Pannus can lead to visual impairment and even blindness and can develop very rapidly so it is important to contact your vet immediately if you see these symptoms in your dog. (There is a rare form of pannus which affects the third eyelid rather than the cornea. This form tends to occur in German shepherds.) There is currently no treatment for this condition but your vet will prescribe medication to control your dog’s symptoms.
