The causative agent, Malassezia pachydermatitis, is a common inhabitant of the skin surface and ears of the dog. A change in the environment of the skin can result in colonization by the fungal organism leading to severe skin inflammation or dermatitis. The skin infection is extremely itchy and lesions are generally confined to the ears, lips, inner thighs, paws, or muzzle of the dog. The dog may chew or scratch the affected part in a frenzied manner to address the extreme itching. Loss of hair and malodorous discharge from the lesions are also distinct manifestations. Antifungal drugs and medicated shampoos can bring relief to the symptoms within a week.
