Also called Factor 1 deficiency, Hypofibrinogenemia. This is a disorder characterized by a reduction in the levels of fibrinogen produced by the body, a clotting factor important for blood clot formation. Without fibrinogen, the final step in blood coagulation is inhibited, resulting in prolonged bleeding time and eventually excess bleeding. Bleeding often occurs from the umbilical stump in new born puppies, as well as in mucosal surfaces.
