Species: Dog
Condition: Hepatitis – Chronic Active
Organ System: Gastrointestinal
It is an inflammatory disease of the liver prevalent among small to medium breed dogs, but can also affect other breeds. Spaniels are especially predisposed to the problem, as well as Bedlington terriers, Skye terriers, standard Poodles, Doberman Pinschers, and West Highland White terriers. The problem is often viewed as an autoimmune disease, where the dog’s immune system attacks its own liver. Jaundice is a common symptom in advanced cases. Treatment regimen is complicated and involves symptomatic treatment, antibiotics, and immune suppressants. Diet is a significant factor in the treatment of chronic active hepatitis.
