Species: Dog
Condition: Cryptococcosis
Organ System: Immune
Cryptococcosis is a systemic fungal disease caused by Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii. The fungus is found in soil and fowl manure, especially in pigeon droppings. Animals can get infected by inhalation of spores or contamination of wounds. Most commonly affected are young adult dogs; most dogs younger than 4 years old. More commonly affected breeds include German shepherds and American cocker spaniels. In dogs, cryptococcosis disseminates to other sites, particularly the CNS and eyes. CNS signs include involuntary eye movement, facial paralysis, paresis, paraplegia or tetraplegia, incoordination, circling, and seizures. Eye infection is commonly seen as inflammation of the optic nerve, the choroid and retina of the eye. Treatment involves the use of antifungal drugs.
