Condition: Footpad Disorder
Organ System: Integument
Footpad disorders can be caused by several disease conditions, including Familial footpad hyperkeratosis, atopy, Pemphigus foliaceus (an autoimmune disorder), allergy, bacterial and fungal/yeast infection, parasites, zinc deficiency, and warts (Canine Papillomavirus). In German Shepherd dogs, a hereditary disorder of footpads has been described. Clinical signs vary by disease but may include foot licking and salivary staining, redness, bleeding paws or digits, odor, sloughing pads, lumps, lameness, reduced food intake, and weight loss. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include antibiotics, anti fungal medications, topical foot scrubs or soaks, zinc supplementation (for Zinc-responsive Dermatosis), immunosuppressive drugs, and surgery.
