Species: Dog
Condition: Idiopathic Onychomadesis
Organ System: Integument
It is a condition that affects the claws or toenails of dogs. The term refers to the total separation of the nail bed, which may be accompanied by sloughing of the dog’s nail. The cause has not been established, but is thought to have an immune-mediated component. Other symptoms include new nails that are short, brittle, and/or deformed. Most cases often occur in dogs 1-6 years of age. Diagnosis is based on the history, results of physical examination and ruling out other causes of nail problems. Line of treatment involves complete removal of affected nails under general anesthesia, antibiotics, fatty acid supplementation, and prednisone.
