Species: Dog
Condition: Angular Deformity of the Tibia
Organ System: Musculoskeletal
When there is a faulty union in the fragments of a fractured bone in the shaft (malunion) of the tibia, angular deformities may occur. Most of these deformities in the tibia are in valgus configurations; however any position is also possible. The deformity can be corrected in procedures that are viewed as purely cosmetic surgeries, which are often undertaken for canines that perform in the show ring. Surgical corrections are indicated in dogs suffering from a functional ability that can be corrected by osteotomy.
