Species: Dog
Condition: Ocular-skeletal Dysplasia
Organ System: Musculoskeletal
A condition that affects the eyes and bone growth of a dog’s legs. Clinical signs are caused by defects in the cells of the back layer of the eyes which functions in light response and collecting information to be sent to the brain. Instead of a normal smooth sheet of organized cells of the retina, affected dogs have disorganized cells that can form folds. In severe cases, the retina may become separated from the eye capsule. Cataracts of the eye lens may also be present. Affected dogs experience vision problems and can become totally blind. Skeletal abnormalities in the dog’s hind legs cause lameness and give the dog a dwarf-like appearance.
