Species: Dog
Condition: Blindness
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Blindness is a general term that denotes any condition where light is blocked from reaching the retina, leading to impairment of vision. Some of the most important causes of blindness in dogs include glaucoma, retinal disease, and uveitis. Even if a dog has been diagnosed with blindness or irreversible vision loss, this should not be viewed as a catastrophe. The dog’s other senses can compensate for the loss of sight. One way to test a dog’s eyesight is a performance test that gives qualitative information about the condition. However, a veterinary examination should be undertaken to assess the degree of impairment.
