Species: Dog
Condition: Organic Aciduria
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Also called l-2-Hydroxyglutaric aciduria (l-2-HGA). This is a hereditary neuro-metabolic disorder which is characterized by abnormal changes in the brain, affecting the gray matter of the cerebellum, cerebral cortex, thalamus, and brain stem. It is caused by the increased concentration of L-2-Hydroxyglutaric acid in the cerebrospinal fluid, and in the blood plasma. Distinct symptoms reflect the progressive deterioration of the function of the central nervous system. Affected dogs suffer from epileptic seizures and may have an abnormally enlarged brain and head, called macrocephaly. Many cases of the disease have been described in Staffordshire bull terriers. Medications help control recurrent epileptic seizures.
