It is a hereditary form of epilepsy which can occur in dogs of any breed. Miniature wire-haired dachshunds, beagles, and basset hounds are more predisposed to the problem. The first signs appear in animals over 5 years of age, but may also be manifested in younger dogs. Myclonus or jerking is a distinct feature and induced by sudden noise or movement, and flashing lights. Some dogs may exhibit generalized or complex partial seizures. It is a slow-progressing condition and a variety of neurological signs may be manifested including dementia, ataxia, and blindness. Affected dogs may live a normal life but euthanasia may be an option if the quality of life diminishes.
