Species: Dog
Condition: Cerebellar Ataxia
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
The condition occurs when the cerebellum of the brain sustains considerable damage. The cerebellum is responsible for regulating the control and coordination of the dog’s movement. It may be a congenital defect or a result of infections or tumors in the brain. Symptoms of the disease usually appear later in life, and include decreased motor coordination and possibly cognitive impairment. Affected puppies appear normal at birth but later on develop specific signs of the disease. Cerebellar ataxia is a progressive and fatal disease, and there is no effective treatment.
