Species: Dog
Condition: Anophthalmia
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
This is a very rare congenital condition in which a dog is born without one or both of its eyes. It can affect all breeds of dogs however, breeds that carry the gene for double merle coat patterns, such as the Australian shepherd, are more susceptible to the condition. Double merle dogs are those which are born with two copies of the merle gene and absence of pigmentation, which can eventually lead to vision problems. A dig born with anopthalmia needs specialized care to help them adapt to their environment.
