Species: Dog
Condition: Aortic Stenosis
Organ System: Cardiovascular
One of the most common congenital heart disorders in dogs. It is a defect of the valve dividing the lower left heart chamber from the opening of the aorta. In mild cases the dogs appear healthy and this condition doesnÂ’t impair their quality of life. But, as the disease progresses, the symptoms start appearing and worsen in later years (weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance). The vet usually diagnoses this condition during regular check-up due to the presence of the characteristic heart murmur. Treatment and prognosis depend on the severity of the condition, including heart supporting drugs and surgical correction of the faulty valve.
