Species: Dog
Condition: Asthma
Organ System: Respiratory
Asthma in dogs is a health condition that affects the respiratory system, particularly the bronchi, resulting in bouts of coughing. This is a hypersensitivity reaction as a result of a dog’s exposure and inhalation of various allergens or substances. When the dog’s immune system responds negatively to any allergen, there is production of serotonin and inflammatory cells that will eventually lead to the constriction or narrowing of the air passages. Dogs differ in their response to potential allergens. Some of the most common asthma-triggers include dust mites, grasses, pollens, mold, chemicals, cigarette smoke, and food ingredients.
