Brachycephalic Syndrome in dogs

Species: Dog
Condition: Brachycephalic Syndrome
Organ System: Cardiovascular

Brachycephalic dogs are those with short heads and therefore short noses. Typical brachycephalic breeds are: Boston terrier; British bulldog; French bulldog; Lhasa apso; Pekingese; Pug; Shar-pei; Shih tzu; Cavalier King Charles spaniel and Staffordshire bull terrier. Because short faces mean short noses and compressed respiratory systems, these dogs are susceptible to breathing difficulties ranging from snoring to fainting. Symptoms of brachycephalic syndrome are generally obvious from an early age and are usually controlled by a combination of managing your dog according to your vet’s advice and if necessary medication or surgery.
