Species: Dog
Condition: Carotid Body Tumors
Organ System: Cardiovascular
Usually a benign tumour affecting the specialized chemoreceptor tissue inside of the carotid arteries in the neck. It grows slowly and rarely metastasises. Clinical issues start to occur when the tumours block the normal flow of blood or lymph through the neck. Dogs can have troubles swallowing and eating, they regurgitate; often with visible lump in the neck. Vet will perform extensive examination and testing in order to confirm the diagnosis. Because of its location, it is virtually impossible to remove the tumour and therefore the prognosis is very poor. For alternative treating options, it is best to consult with your vet.
