Species: Dog
Condition: Cerebrovascular Disease
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Commonly referred to as ‘stroke’. There are two main types of Cerebrovascular Disease that are recognized in dogs—ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic strokes are more common compared to hemorrhagic strokes. Hemorrhage can be detected with a CT scan; however it is not sensitive enough to detect ischemic changes. Most cases of ischemic stroke in dogs have better prognosis, with recovery within a few weeks as long as there is proper supportive care. Although not as common, hemorrhagic stroke results in higher mortality. Possibility of neurologic deterioration is highest during the first 24 hours.
