Species: Dog
Condition: Ceroid Lipofuscinosis
Organ System: Cardiovascular

A serious nervous system disorder caused by the hereditary metabolic anomaly. Affected dogs are missing an enzyme that removes harmful waste material from nervous tissues. Young dogs appear healthy and start showing symptoms of progressive nervous system deterioration at the age of 15 to 18 months. There are significant behavioural changes with irrational fear, aggressiveness and confusion. Dogs experience vision loss, lack of coordination when standing and moving. Once the symptoms appear, they rapidly progress. Having in mind a very poor prognosis and the lack of adequate treatment method, it is humane to consider putting the dog to sleep.
