A cleft lip or palate is a disorder in which your dog has an opening in their lip or in the roof of their mouth (palate), where the parts of your dog’s body failed to fuse together correctly while in the womb. It mainly occurs as a hereditary condition in the following breeds: Boston terrier, Brittany, American Cocker spaniel, Dachshund, British bulldog, French bulldog, German shepherd, Labrador retriever, Pekingese, Pointer (English pointer), miniature Schnauzer, Shih tzu, American pit bull terrier, English toy spaniel. It has also been linked to the use of certain medications during pregnancy. This disorder can be corrected with surgery.
