Species: Dog
Condition: Coliform Enteritis
Organ System: Cardiovascular
A bowel inflammation caused by certain kinds of bacteria, especially E.coli. Enteritis doesnÂ’t affect any specific breed; every dog is susceptible. In young puppies it is a life threatening condition. Dogs have stomach cramps, fever and nausea with vomiting. Characteristic sign is frequent defecation with profuse, foul smelling diarrhoea, sometimes with traces of blood. Enteritis is a serious condition and requires immediate medical attention. In mild cases treatment is limited to dietary adjustments, but in severe cases it is necessary to correct dehydration (due to vomiting and diarrhoea) and to eliminate the infection with antibiotics.
