Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the tissue covering the eyeball and the cornea and lining the eyelids and the third eyelid. Signs of conjunctivitis include redness of the eye(s) and discharge from the eye(s), squinting or spasmodic blinking, or formation of follicles on the eye. Causes of conjunctivitis include viral (canine herpesvirus-1, canine adenovirus 2, canine distemper, canine influenza), bacterial, or parasitic infection, allergies, immune-mediated disorders, tumors of the eyelids and conjunctiva, eyelid abnormalities, obstructed tear ducts, trauma to the eye or irritation from foreign bodies, smoke or environmental pollutants, and other eye disorders. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
