Species: Dog
Condition: Cutaneous Asthenia
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Cutaneous asthenia is the name given to a group of conditions which related to deficiencies in collagen, the tissue which gives skin its strength. The lack of collagen means that the skin tears very easily, even when your dog scratches. If your dog suffers from one of these disorders then they are likely to have very soft, thin, skin, which is very elastic and often hangs loosely on the body. There is currently no cure for this condition and the intensive care your dog will need for the rest of its life is a significant commitment. You should discuss with your vet whether you can manage this or whether to have your dog put to sleep.
