Species: Dog
Condition: Deafness
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Inherited deafness (due to the failure of the hearing organs) generally becomes noticeable shortly after birth. Although deafness can occur across all breeds, it is particularly prevalent in dogs with coats which are white, merle or piebald, especially if they also have blue eyes. Deafness can occur in one or both ears. If it occurs in one ear then it may only be noticed as part of an ear examination, however if your dog is deaf in both ears then they will require very careful handling in order to enjoy a good quality of life as they are prone to startle easily, which can lead to biting and are more of a challenge to train.
