Species: Dog
Condition: Dermatomyositis & Ulcerative Dermatosis
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Dermatomyositis and ulcerative dermatosis are unique to collies and Shetland sheepdogs. They are believed to be caused by deficiencies in the immune system. Dermatomyositis tends to affect dogs at 6 months or less while ulcerative dermatosis affects older dogs. The symptoms of both disorders include crusting and lumps in the skin, with muscle disorders potentially occurring later. In mild cases where only the skin is affected, your dog may recover without treatment. In more severe cases where the muscles are affected, your vet may be able to contain the condition but in very severe cases it may be kindest to have your dog put to sleep.
