Species: Dog
Condition: Dystocia
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Dystocia occurs when a pregnant bitch experiences difficulty or fail to whelp. The causes may range from maternal to fetal factors such as a narrow pelvis of the mother or a puppy with a large head and shoulders such as those distinct in brachycephalic breeds. Abnormalities in the presentation and position of the fetus can also cause whelping difficulties. Small dog breeds that are high-strung and nervous may have higher risks of suffering from dystocia due to primary uterine inertia and possible psychological inhibition. When a bitch has been undergoing persistent and strong abdominal contractions for more than 30 minutes, dystocia may be suspected and assessed by the veterinarian. Treatment may involve surgical and/medical intervention.
