Species: Dog
Condition: Eclampsia
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

A condition of lowered calcium blood levels of in bitches after giving birth. It usually happens during lactation, due to loss of calcium to the milk. Toy breeds in their first pregnancy are most commonly affected. Bitches act strangely after giving birth; they are restless, displaying muscle tremors and weakness. In advanced stages, they lose coordination with muscle spasms and convulsions. This is a very serious condition and if left untreated can be life threatening. Your vet can stabilize the bitch quickly and effectively with intravenous calcium. If she continues nursing the puppies, calcium blood levels should be monitored frequently.
